A Cook’s Tour: An Anthony Bourdain Style Vacation

A man who needs no introduction, a cook we all admire and respect, a world traveler and a world famous author, Anthony Bourdain brought us a concept of exploring the unknown in a way that has made every gourmand jealous. This man has dined in some of the most unfamiliar parts of the planet, his vigorous adventure spirit has led him from the depths of rainforests to the heights of the toughest mountains, and everywhere he went he had a good meal and told us all about it. In his own words, “…whole life, cooking was about control. Traveling and eating are about letting things happen.”

Recently, thousands of people have been waiting impatiently for the new season to start airing, and as he embarks on exploring the feasts and mysteries of Korea, we can only respect this man’s dedication, and hope that we will too get a chance to engage in an adventure like this someday. Really, who wouldn’t join the famous cook in his endeavors? Hundreds of thousands would, and if you are anything like us, you would too. Here before you are a few examples of his exciting travels and rare meal-tasting experiences.

Thailand

“Sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and salty!” – A five words sum up of Anthony’s expedition in the glorious city of Bangkok. Indeed, the famous Thai cuisine has been duplicated and mimicked all around the world. Many restaurants brag about their unique perceptions of these specialties, but until you don’t have a taste of Thai-chicken on the streets of Thailand, you will have no idea how that meal is prepared by the locals, what is their taste exactly and how it cannot be replicated no matter where you find yourself. Experience is what counts.

Brazil

Nothing like a little bit of exercise to burn the calories: Anthony and his wife had a Jiu Jitsy battle in Rio de Janeiro, and it must have been an interesting experience and a great workout, but we will stick to the food if you don’t mind! In Rio, a breathtaking city on the coast of the Atlantic, as our chef recommended, you could try the basic foods and recipes and still be pleasantly surprised by the unique style of cooking and new flavors that may be common for the residents, but are a specialty for the outsiders.

Italy

A world famous cook will not be satisfied with tourist attractions and lunch just anywhere. In Venice, Italy, Anthony Bourdain investigated the dark and very reserved and secluded areas to find a unique offer from an unspoiled Italian chef. Find out how even something simple as risotto can be prepared in such an exotic way that makes you want to lick your fingers, and the seafood is delicious like nowhere else.

South Africa

The mysteries of dangerous cities? For Bourdain, that only means that its food hasn’t been explored yet, so here he is, our chef in South Africa, preparing an antelope nonetheless. Here we can see the very thrill and excitement of his travels, while he confronts political injustice and still finds something unique and beautiful to share about this proud nation. It is not all about the bravery, some of it is in a healthy appetite as well.

We can go through all seasons, read many of his bestselling books, but if you don’t find your adventurous spirit and head off to your very own taste of different culinary trips, you will never have the slightest idea how exciting and tasteful these little quests can be. And all you need for that is some vacation time and the will of character; after all, our famous chef claims that:

“Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don’t have.”
